LOOM is a 1990 fantasy adventure game developed by Lucasfilm Games (later known as LucasArts). Set in a world governed by powerful Guilds, it follows Bobbin Threadbare of the Guild of Weavers as he confronts a mystery that threatens reality itself. Instead of traditional inventories or verb menus, LOOM introduces a distinctive musical mechanic: players weave “drafts”—four-note melodies—on a magical distaff to alter the fabric of the world. By learning, combining, and even reversing these tunes, you solve puzzles through sound, observation, and logic.
Designed to be accessible and largely nonviolent, the game minimizes dead ends and emphasizes story, atmosphere, and discovery. It offers multiple difficulty modes that change how notes are presented—ranging from on-screen cues to playing entirely by ear—making its streamlined interface inviting to newcomers and rewarding for seasoned players. An evocative visual style and a score inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake heighten its operatic tone. Originally released on home computers and later updated with voice acting on CD-ROM, LOOM remains a cult classic and an influential example of narrative-driven game design.
